As a principal contractor, we deliver complex infrastructure works through a combination of direct delivery teams, supply chain partners and specialist subcontractors.
The Role
We are looking for a Quantity Surveying Apprentice to join our commercial team supporting the delivery of overhead line and civils projects.
This is an opportunity to start your career with a principal contractor, gaining practical experience while working towards a recognised qualification in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management.
You will support the commercial team across the full project lifecycle, from early-stage planning and procurement through to project delivery, change management and final account settlement.
Role Purpose
The purpose of this apprenticeship is to develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours so that you can progress into a Quantity Surveying role within a principal contractor environment.
You will learn how to support the commercial management of infrastructure works by helping to monitor costs, assess applications for payment, manage subcontractors, assist with valuations, maintain records and contribute to reporting and change control.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the commercial management of overhead line and civils works across live infrastructure projects.
- Support the preparation of monthly valuations, cost reports, forecasts and variation submissions.
- Assist in the assessment of subcontractor applications and processing of payments in line with agreed procedures.
- Help maintain accurate records of labour, plant, materials, subcontract costs and site progress.
- Support the management of compensation events, variations, early warnings and other change control processes.
- Assist with measurement of completed works and preparation of supporting commercial documentation.
- Work with site teams to understand progress, outputs, productivity and risks that may affect commercial performance.
- Support procurement and subcontract administration for specialist works, plant hire and civils packages.
- Assist the wider team with tendering and work-winning activities where required.
- Develop an understanding of contract requirements and commercial procedures, including NEC forms of contract.
Entry Requirements
- Scottish Highers at grade BBC or above OR, 2 A levels at grade BC or above OR, NC Built Environment; Foundation Apprenticeship Civil Engineering
- A genuine interest in construction, infrastructure and the commercial side of project delivery.
- A desire to build a career in Quantity Surveying within a principal contractor organisation.
- Good numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good organisation, time management and communication skills.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word and Outlook.
- A proactive attitude, willingness to learn and a strong work ethic.
- A full driving licence, or be actively working towards achieving one.
- Ability to meet the entry criteria for the relevant apprenticeship programme.
Desirable
- Interest in utilities, energy or power infrastructure.
- Some awareness of construction contracts, commercial processes or NEC contracts.
- Previous work experience, work placement or study related to construction, engineering, surveying or the built environment.
