About the role

Division: Energy

Sector: Civil Engineering / Energy Infrastructure

Role type: Permanent, full-time

Knights Brown is an independent civil engineering contractor delivering complex work across energy, water utilities, infrastructure, coasts & ports, and buildings. We are looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our Energy team, supporting the commercial management of civil engineering projects within the South Wales region.

Our Energy team delivers the civil engineering behind the UK's transition to a lower-carbon energy system, including wind, solar, battery energy storage (BESS) and National Grid projects delivered under NEC and FIDIC contracts, often as a subcontractor to principal contractors.

Reporting to a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will play a key role in keeping the commercial side of your projects on track, working closely with our project, procurement and finance teams and gaining hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle.

Safety comes first at Knights Brown. You will lead by example and play an active part in a culture where everyone takes responsibility for health and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the day-to-day commercial management of projects, ensuring cost, contract and performance are effectively controlled
  • Preparing accurate, substantiated monthly applications for payment and valuations
  • Supporting NEC and FIDIC contract administration, including early warnings, compensation events, variations and notices
  • Identifying and recording change, and collating the substantiation for variations and additional costs
  • Monitoring costs, cashflow and margin, highlighting risks, overspends and opportunities early
  • Assisting with subcontract procurement and managing subcontract accounts, including payments, variations and final accounts
  • Helping produce monthly cost value reconciliations (CVRs), forecasts and commercial reports
  • Maintaining accurate commercial records and supporting client final accounts and audits when required

Requirements

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline (or working towards)
  • Around 1–3 years' experience in an Assistant Quantity Surveyor or similar commercial role within civil engineering, construction or infrastructure
  • Experience supporting valuations, cost reporting and subcontract accounts
  • Some knowledge of NEC contracts and a desire to develop your contract management skills
  • Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail, with a proactive, organised approach
  • Good communication skills and strong Microsoft Excel ability
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable:

  • Exposure to NEC3/NEC4 or FIDIC, and familiarity with CESMM4
  • Experience on energy, renewables or utilities projects (wind, solar, BESS, grid or substation works)
  • Working towards RICS or ICES membership, with an interest in a long-term career in commercial management

Why join Knights Brown

  • Real engineering work – delivering complex, high-impact infrastructure
  • Direct delivery model – engineering-led teams with real control
  • Responsibility with support – ownership backed by experienced teams
  • Progression through experience – develop through real project delivery
  • A place you belong – collaborative, straightforward working culture

Location & travel

  • Based at our Bridgend office
  • Travel to project sites across South Wales as required, with occasional travel further afield dependent on project location

Our commitment

We are committed to an inclusive workplace where everyone is treated with respect and given equal opportunity, and we welcome applications from the Armed Forces Community.
