Senior Quantity Surveyor

Location: Chichester, West Sussex (with occasional travel to Southampton)

About Us

Our Environment Business delivers end-to-end asset solutions across the UK, supporting clients including Yorkshire Water, United Utilities, Anglian Water, Thames Water, Southern Water, Welsh Water, Northumbrian Water, Affinity Water and Scottish Water. We have delivered more than £2bn of assets since AMP3 and continue to grow.

We currently operate two capital delivery frameworks for Southern Water (AMP7 and AMP8), with secured work through to 2035. Due to this expanding programme, we are looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team.

About the Role

The role is based in the South East with flexibility to work between office, site and home. You will work closely with your line manager to support the commercial administration, reporting and performance of a major project or portfolio of smaller schemes. You will play a key role in cost control, contract and change management, risk mitigation and maintaining a positive cash position. You will also contribute to pre-construction activities, procurement, contract reviews and commercial governance.

Essential: Experience with NEC contracts

Advantageous: Experience in the water sector

Responsibilities

  • Promote and contribute to a safe working environment
  • Prepare and manage subcontract documentation, including negotiating terms, prices and programmes
  • Manage subcontract packages, including interim assessments and change control
  • Issue commercial notices to clients and subcontractors in line with contract requirements
  • Manage change in accordance with the contract, including preparing Compensation Event Quotations
  • Prepare, submit and agree monthly applications for payment
  • Work closely with operational and engineering colleagues to ensure accurate site records
  • Produce detailed monthly reports and Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs)
  • Identify and manage risks and opportunities to support margin improvement
  • Manage main contract change control using the client's CEMAR system
  • Contribute to business targets, including cash, profit and return on capital
  • Develop strong relationships with clients and stakeholders to support repeat business
  • Create and maintain cost plans, forecasts and subcontractor liability schedules using Oracle-based systems
  • Evaluate expenditure reports and address variances
  • Attend progress and risk reduction meetings with clients and subcontractors
  • Support senior leaders in the implementation of initiatives and change activities
  • Provide commercial advice to estimating and bid teams
  • Support and develop commercial team members to help them reach their potential

About You

  • Professional qualification such as MCIOB or MRICS (incorporated or working towards full membership desirable)
  • Experience working within a civil engineering environment (e.g., Highways, Rail, Water, Aviation)
  • Experience delivering large single projects or multiple smaller schemes
  • CSCS card (as appropriate)
  • Strong knowledge of standard forms of contract
  • Proficient IT skills, including Excel, Word and commercial systems (CEMAR, Asite, Orbit)
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Good understanding of construction processes
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities
  • Proven experience in negotiation and final account settlement
